Whisky Review No.65 - The Single Cask Whisky Bar Singapore

This week's review focuses on a rather impressive expression from Macduff distillery and it in some ways highlights the difference in character between the official distillery style and independent single cask releases.

While the distillery may be known as Macduff, the official bottlings are sold under either Glen Deveron (for the older range) and The Deveron (the current range) at retail stores and Duty Free.

This week's review focuses on an expression of Macduff which was distilled in 1991, matured for 22 years in a single bourbon cask before being bottled at a cask strength abv of 53.3% by independent bottler, Carn Mor, for their Celebration of the Cask range.

So, let's jump right into the review!

Macduff 1991 22 Years Old (Bottled by Carn Mor, 53.3% abv)

Colour: Amber

Nose: Initial entry presents a spirited and sweet aroma which is redolent with floral hints, jasmine tea, barley, hints of lime and some oak. Wood spices such as cinnamon and cloves emerge after some time and intermingle with the oak and malt.

Palate: Initial entry presents a pronounced hint of heat which is expected from the cask strength nature of this dram. Oak, white pepper, capsicum, the aforementioned wood spices, lime and jasmine tea emerge on the palate over time and are chased by some mint and lavender.

Finish: Medium to long on the finish, with the oak and wood spices becoming more pronounced.

Balance: A rather well-balanced and pleasant dram which showcases a fair bit of complexity and power while retaining the general flavour profile that one would associate with a Macduff. The cask strength nature of this dram allows for more of the complexity to shine through and the mouthfeel is oily and becomes increasingly drying over time.
