The Single Cask Whisky Review #58: Glen Grant 1992 22 Years Old

This week's review focuses on a rather stellar expression from Glen Grant distillery which was bottled at cask strength by independent bottler Carn Mor.

What makes this expression special? Rather than bottling it for their regular "Strictly Limited" range, they have deemed this particular cask to be one of distinction, thus making it worthy to be bottled as a part of their "Celebrate of the Cask" range!

As we have previously delved into the history of the distillery, we will not revisit that area and that information can be found at the following link: Glen Grant

This expression was distilled in 1992, matured for 22 years in a bourbon barrel before being bottled at a cask strength abv of 57% by Carn Mor. Be warned, for this whisky is no pushover!

Glen Grant 1992 22 Years Old (Bottled by Carn Mor, Celebration of the Cask, 57% abv)

Colour: Bright gold

Nose: Initial entry presents a pronounced hit of spice and alcohol, which alludes to the cask strength nature of this dram. Cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice and clove combine to provide a spice-laden attack on the senses and this goes on for quite a while before the spices begin to recede.

Bourbon-esque hints coupled with vanilla and white flowers then emerge, along with some oak and just a tiny hint of dessicated coconut.

Palate: The spices from the nose inundate the palate and sear it, rendering it immobile for a few seconds before receding in order to allow for the other elements to show. Rich and dense bourbon and vanilla notes coupled with marzipan, vanilla ice cream, floral hints and honey then emerge along with some of the dessicated coconut and oak from the nose.

Finish: Long, lingering and spicy to the very end, with the wood spices and oak taking control of the proceedings once again.

Balance: A rather spicy effort from Glen Grant, although it is definitely not one-dimensional in any sense of the word. This is a rich and enjoyable expression which showcases the effect that a rather good bourbon cask can have on the spirit from a distillery which is otherwise known to be easy-drinking.

This expression of Glen Grant is available for purchase by the dram or bottle and as a part of the "Celebration of the Cask" flight for in-bar consumption or by the bottle for retail/takeaway purposes.

Please approach our friendly bar staff for more information and they will be more than happy to assist you with any enquiries you may have.
