This week's review focuses on one of the expressions from the latest SMWS Outturn which has arrived at The Single Cask.
This expression was distilled on the 20th of August 2001 at a world famous distillery in Orkney, matured in a refill ex-Oloroso sherry butt for 15 years before being bottled at a cask strength abv of 59.7% and with an outturn of 474 bottles by the SMWS.
So, let's dive right into the review!
SMWS 4.238 "Surrender Your Soul" (59.7% abv)
Colour: Bright gold
Nose: Initial entry presents a rather interesting citrus note followed by sea salt, oak, sherry and some gentle peat. There is a leafy green note within the mix as well and it is followed by mango, dark chocolate and light smoke.
Palate: Initial entry presents more of what was detected on the nose as it has transferred onto the palate, although there are hints of olive oil, marzipan, shrimp, lemon juice and toffee. The most interesting part of the palate though is how the sherry, peat and oak initially arrive as three distinct segments, before eventually intermingling beautifully to form one cohesive and complex flavour.
Finish: Long on the finish, with the sherry, gentle peat, dark chocolate and oak following through to the very end alongside a whiff of cigar smoke.
Balance: A supremely well-balanced expression from this celebrated Orkney distillery which exhibits characteristics which are both consistent and divergent with the house style. The mouthfeel is oily for the most part and displays just a touch of dryness towards the very end.
This expression can be sampled by the dram at the bar or can be purchased by SMWS members on the website for the exceptionally affordable price of $265 per bottle. Please be advised that there are a limited number of bottles and this expression will not be around for long.
