Tomintoul is a relatively modern distillery in terms of the whisky industry in Scotland, having been founded in 1964 and undergone a succession of ownership changes in the intervening years.
The distillery has been owned by independent bottler Angus Dundee since 2000 and the company has been credited with increasing the profile of the distillery through the advent and sale of a number of single malts of both the unpeated and peated varieties.
This week's review focuses on an expression of Tomintoul which was distilled in 1995, matured for 22 years in a bourbon cask before being bottled at a cask strength abv of 53.2% by The Single Cask.
So, let's dive right into the review!
The Single Cask Tomintoul 1995 22 Years Old (53.2% abv)
Nose: Initial entry presents a rather sweet and slightly savoury hint, followed by faint herbals such as sage and thyme. Wet leaves, oak shavings and some cinnamon emerge and are complemented by Manuka honey and mulled mead.
Palate: Initial entry presents more of the sweet and savoury hints alongside a certain citrusy note. Clean and quite pleasant, the herbal notes on the nose transfer onto the palate along with the Manuka honey and mulled mead hints.
There is a certain spiciness brought on by the oak shavings and cinnamon and it is complemented by barley sugar. The oak becomes quite pronounced over time.
Finish: Medium on the finish, with the sweetness from the barley sugar intermingling well with the wood spice, herbs and savoury hints. The oak is well and truly in control.
Balance: A rather well-balanced and enticing expression from a rather unfashionable distillery which exhibits a sweet and a drying side. The mouthfeel is generally drying, with the level of dryness increasing over time.
This expression of Tomintoul can be purchased by the bottle or the dram for in-bar consumption or even as a part of our The Single Cask Collection flight. It can also be purchased by the bottle for retail/takeaway purposes.
