This week's review focuses on one of two expressions of Glenrothes which were bottled by The Single Cask in recent times. The Edrington-owned distillery (whose single malt brand was up until recently owned by Berry Bros & Rudd) is well-known for putting out vintage releases of their single malts in distinctive squat bottles.
This expression of Glenrothes was distilled in 1997, filled into a refill sherry butt (in fact, there were several sherry butts being filled during this time and the majority of them have slowly been released over the course of the year) and matured for 19 long years before being bottled at a cask strength abv of 58.5% by The Single Cask.
So, let's dive right into the review!
The Single Cask Glenrothes 1997 19 Years Old (58.5% abv)
Nose: Initial entry presents an alcoholic hit followed by a fairly rounded sweetness, black pepper and red fruits which are reminiscent of apricots. A light sherried hint is then followed by cinnamon, some meaty hints and worn leather. With time, oak and brown sugar emerge.
Palate: Initial entry presents a sweet, rich and rounded note, with the sherry, black pepper, oak and savoury meaty notes intermingling well. The sweetness underpins everything but also provides a platform on which the cinnamon and nutmeg can shine.
Finish: Long and lingering on the finish, with the sweetness and wood spices in control alongside the oak and black pepper.
Balance: A very well-balanced and very expressive dram which has been drawn from a rather good refill sherry butt. Simplistic in nature, but with some hidden complexities which reveal themselves over time. The mouthfeel is largely oily with some dryness towards the end.
This expression of Glenrothes can be purchased by the bottle, dram or as a part of a flight for in-bar consumption or by the bottle for retail/takeaway purposes. Please be advised that there aren't many bottles available and sales will therefore be limited.
Please approach our friendly staff and they will be more than happy to assist you with your enquiries.
