This review focuses on a delectable undisclosed Orkney expression which was distilled in 2009, matured initially in a bourbon hogshead before being transferred to a PX octave for an additional period of maturation then being bottled at a natural cask strength abv of 61.2% in 2019.
So, lets dive right into the review!
The Single Cask Orkney 2009 10 Years Old (61.2% abv)
Nose: Lots of sweetness on the nose, with toasted almonds & floral, heathery overtones. A wave of peat comes through but is veiled in damp slate and sea air.
Palate: The heather persists, with other floral spices giving way to honeyed sweetness & some subtle dark chocolate. Citrus fruits develop over time, along with the peat which takes the form of bonfire smoke.
Finish: Warm & drying, the finish is long & smoky. Some green notes persist, along with the oak tannins & the delicate spices.
