This review focuses on the first in a series of two undisclosed Islay Malt expressions which are rather interesting and somewhat unusual. This expression was distilled in 2009, matured initially in a bourbon hogshead before being transferred to an Oloroso octave for an additional 6 months of maturation before being bottled at a cask strength abv of 54.4% in 2018.
So, let's dive right into the review!
The Single Cask Islay Malt 2009 8 Years Old #OCT001 (54.4% abv)
Nose: A rich and complex series of aromas, dominated by sweet coffee flavours and earthy hints of juniper & brine.
Palate: At full strength sherry notes dominate the palate, at first sweet but then the Islay character coming through; charred meats and rich stewed fruits fight their way to the forefront. Oily and full-bodied, without the prickle that might be expected at cask strength.
Finish: The finish is surprisingly long, the peat still aggressive with notes reminiscent of burnt rubber, brandy and sticky toffee pudding. A complex dram, not for the faint-hearted!
